In celebration of Older American's Month, Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans (NARA) President, Tom (TBird) Bird, sat with Nevada Senate Majority Leader, Senator Nicole Cannizzaro during general assembly.  NARA held a tabling event in the Legislature lobby during the day, sharing information important to seniors and those that will retire one day.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak has signed into law a historic bill granting 20,000 state workers the right to collectively bargain.

The bill, which he signed Wednesday, is the largest expansion of collective bargaining rights for state workers anywhere in the U.S. in 16 years, and it will position those workers to better fight a rigged economy that favors the wealthy.

The 2019 Nevada Legislature ended midnight Monday June 3, 2019 on a spectacular note for State Employees when a bill was passed by both houses granting them Collective Bargaing Rights for the first time ever in Nevada.  You can read more about the Retirees Chapter 4041 journey through this years legislative session by clicking on the Nevada 80th (2019) Legislature Session News link on the home page.

The following is a message sent by AFSCME President Lee Saunders, proclaiming the victory:

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Public service workers across the country lauded the passage of Nevada Senate Bill 135, which expands collective bargaining rights to over 20,000 Nevada state employees – the largest statewide expansion of collective bargaining rights in 16 years.

The bill, expected to be signed into law by Gov. Steve Sisolak, comes at a time when unions are experiencing the highest level of public support in more than a decade.

At the AFSCME Retirees Chapter 4041 meeting held Thursday March 21, 2019, nominations for Chapter Officers were held with the following results:

PRESIDENT- Charles Muller; VICE PRESIDENT- Roger Bremner; TREASURER - Patty Machal; SECRETARY - Sandra Hudgens; DIRECTOR SOUTH - Laura Leavitt; DIRECTOR NORTH - Steven Suwe; DIRECTOR AT LARGE - Joan  Papaianni; TRUSTEES - Gail Milne, Fred Suwe, and Shirley Suwe.

As all offices were uncontested, the nominees were elected by acclaimation.  Each office is a 2 year term.

Thursday February 28, 2019, the AFSCME Retirees Chapter 4041 hosted a Legislative Reception featuring Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak.  Other attendees included Lt. Governor Kate Marshall, Attorney General Aaron Ford and Controller Catherine Byrne, as well as numerous State Legislators from both the Senate and Assembly.
